Oral rehydration therapy

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a way of replacing lost fluids in your body. When you are sick and can't keep fluids down, or if you are sweaty and have lost lots of fluids, you need ORT to help put the liquids back into your body. To get ORT, you drink special liquids that have water, salt and sugar in them. The liquids help to replenish the fluids and minerals that your body needs. ORT is one of the most important treatments that your doctor can recommend when you are sick, especially if you have diarrhea or vomiting which make it difficult to keep down other kinds of fluids.
