An organic compound is like the ingredients that you use when you make cookies or soup. Just like how you mix flour, sugar, and butter to make cookie dough or put vegetables, meat, and water to make soup, organic compounds are made up of different smaller things called molecules that are mixed together to make a larger compound.
But unlike cookie dough or soup, organic compounds are found in living things (plants and animals) and are very important for life. They are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes oxygen, nitrogen, and other elements.
Think about building blocks that can be used to build different things like Legos. These molecules are like the different shapes and colors of Legos that we can use to build different structures.
Just like how you can make different things with Legos, scientists can make different compounds using different molecules. Organic compounds are used to make a lot of things, like medicines, plastics, and even gasoline for our cars!
