Orion Abort Test Booster

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes when we go on a car ride, we have to wear a seatbelt to keep us safe in case there's an accident? Well, when people go up to space in a big rocket ship, they have to wear special seatbelts too, called harnesses.

Now, just like with a car, we want to make sure that these harnesses and other safety equipment actually work if we need them. So that's what an Orion abort test booster is for.

It's a special rocket that we can launch into the sky when nobody is in it, and then we can activate a button that makes it go really fast and really high, just like if people were inside. This lets us test if the seatbelts and other safety equipment in the real rocket would work if there was a problem and the people needed to escape quickly.

By doing this test, we can make sure that astronauts are as safe as possible when they go up to space. Pretty cool, huh?
