Orphan work

Okay, so you know how sometimes adults lose track of things? Well, sometimes they lose track of who made a picture or video or story. And they put it out for everyone to use but without saying who made it because they don't know who made it. This means the thing is an "orphan work."

So, let's say someone wants to use that picture or video or story, they're in a sticky situation because they don't know if they're allowed to use it or not. Because if they use it without permission and it turns out someone DID make it, they could get into trouble for using it without permission.

And that's why people are trying to figure out ways to find out who made these orphan works, so everyone can use them without getting into trouble. Because it's not fair to keep things like pictures or videos or stories locked away and not let people enjoy them.
