An oscillator is like a toy that goes back and forth. You can imagine a swing or a pendulum that keeps moving in the same way. In electronics, an oscillator is a circuit that also goes back and forth, but instead of moving physically, it creates an electrical signal that goes up and down.
To represent an oscillator, people use a graph called a waveform. This graph shows how the electrical signal changes over time. It looks like a bunch of squiggly lines going up and down, going back and forth.
Different types of oscillators can have different waveforms. Some waveforms look like a straight line that goes up and down quickly, like a light switch turning on and off really fast. Others waveforms look more like a sine curve or a curve that looks like a wave in the ocean.
People use oscillators for lots of things. They can use them to keep time, like in clocks and watches. They can also use them to make sound waves, like in speakers or musical instruments. Oscillators can be used in phones, computers, and lots of other electronics.
