ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Outer ear

The outer ear is the part of your ear that you can see and touch. It's the part of your ear that sticks out from the side of your head. The outer ear has two parts: the pinna and the ear canal.

The pinna is the part of your ear that you can see, and it's shaped like a shell. It helps you to hear by collecting sound waves and directing them into your ear. The pinna is also made up of cartilage, which is a flexible material that helps to protect your ear.

The ear canal is the part of your ear that goes into your head. It's a narrow tube that's about an inch long, and it's lined with tiny hairs and wax-producing glands. The ear canal helps to funnel sound waves down to your eardrum, which is a thin membrane that separates your outer ear from your middle ear.

Together, the pinna and the ear canal work together to capture sound from the environment and bring it into your ear. Without the outer ear, you wouldn't be able to hear all the amazing sounds around you!
