Over-the-horizon radar

Over-the-horizon radar is a type of radar that can detect things (like airplanes or ships) that are a long distance away. It works by sending out a short pulse of energy and then waiting for that energy to bounce back off of something (like an airplane or ship). Then, using the time it took for the energy to bounce back, special computers can figure out things like where the object is and how fast it is moving.
