ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overscan

Overscan is when your TV screen shows a little bit more than what you're supposed to see. It's like when you color a picture a bit outside the lines, but on purpose.

Back in the day, TVs and screens were made differently than they are now. They used to have a small part of the picture that wasn't shown on the TV screen. This was to make sure you didn't see any weird stuff on the edges of the picture, like black bars or logos.

But sometimes, this extra little part of the picture is called overscan. It's not a big problem, but sometimes it can make the picture look a little weird if the TV or computer screen doesn't adjust to fit the picture just right.

Nowadays, most screens are made so that you can see the whole picture without any extra stuff going on around the edges. But if you're watching an old movie or show, or playing an older video game, you might still see overscan on your TV or computer screen.
