ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overseas territory (France)

Imagine you have a big house with many rooms. Some of the rooms are your bedroom, your playroom, and your kitchen. Now, let's pretend that your big house is France. France has many different parts, just like your house has many rooms.

One of the parts of France is an overseas territory, which means it's not in Europe, where the rest of France is located. Instead, it's very far away, like when you go on vacation to a place that's really far from home.

There are a few places that are part of France but aren't actually on the mainland. One of them is called French Polynesia, and it's made up of many small islands in the Pacific Ocean. Another is called Guadeloupe, which is an island in the Caribbean Sea.

Even though these places are far away from France, they still belong to France and are governed by French laws and leaders. People who live in these places are French citizens, just like people who live in the rest of France.

So, just like your big house has many rooms, France has many different parts. And some of those parts are located far away overseas, but are still part of France.
