ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overtone band

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a toy xylophone before? You know how when you hit a key it makes a sound, right?

Well, when you hit a key on a real xylophone, it doesn't just make one sound. It actually makes a bunch of different sounds all at the same time. These other sounds that you hear are called overtones.

Think of it like when you sing "la la la" and then someone else sings "la" at the same time but at a higher pitch. You can hear two different notes being sung at the same time. That's like an overtone.

Now, if we take all of these overtones that are being made by the different keys on a xylophone and put them together, we get what's called an overtone band. It's sort of like a group of sounds that are all playing together all at once.

And just like with the xylophone, other instruments like a guitar or piano or even your voice can make overtones too. So an overtone band is just a group of different sounds all happening at the same time.
