ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pair gain

Imagine you have a big box filled with a bunch of crayons of different colors. Each crayon represents a piece of information, like a phone call or an internet connection.

Now imagine that you want to share these crayons with your friend who lives down the street. However, you don't want to give them the whole box, just a few crayons, because you still want to use the rest of the crayons for yourself.

So, you take out a few specific crayons and put them in a smaller box, then send that smaller box to your friend. Once your friend has the box of crayons, they can use those specific colors to make calls or use the internet.

This is kind of like pair gain. In the real world, a pair gain system is used to split a single phone line or internet connection into multiple lines, so that multiple people can use it at the same time.

Just like taking out specific crayons from the big box, a pair gain system separates certain pairs of wires in a phone cable to create additional phone lines or internet connections. This way, more people can use the same cable at the same time.

So next time you're coloring with your crayons, remember how pair gain works!
