ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Paradoxical intention

Hey kiddo! Have you ever tried really hard to fall asleep but it just wouldn't happen? Well, paradoxical intention is a way of dealing with that problem.

You know how when you're trying really hard to do something and it's not working, you get super frustrated? That's kind of what happens when you're trying too hard to fall asleep - your brain starts going crazy and making it even harder for you to doze off.

Paradoxical intention is when you do the opposite of what you're supposed to do. So instead of trying really hard to fall asleep, you try really hard to stay awake! Sounds crazy, right?

But here's the cool thing - by trying to stay awake, you trick your brain into thinking that sleep isn't that important. Your brain will start to relax, and before you know it, you'll be fast asleep!

So next time you're having trouble falling asleep, try paradoxical intention. Just tell yourself, "I'm going to stay awake as long as I can." It might seem weird, but it just might help you get the sleep you need. Sweet dreams, kiddo!
