Parent rock

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a sandcastle at the beach? The sand that makes up the sandcastle comes from a bigger thing called a beach, right? Well, in the same way, a parent rock is a bigger rock that can break down into smaller pieces that we eventually use for things like buildings, roads, and even sand for sandcastles.

Just like how you can't build a sandcastle without sand, we can't make things out of rocks without breaking them down first. The parent rock can be made up of different minerals, kind of like how your body is made up of bones, blood, and all sorts of other things.

Sometimes the parent rock is really hard, like a diamond, and other times it's softer, sort of like how clay is easier to shape than a rock. But no matter what it's made of, the parent rock is what everything starts from. So the next time you build a sandcastle, think about the big beach it came from, and how that big beach is like a parent rock!
