ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Parosmia

Parosmia is a big word that means when things smell different than they normally do. You know how when you smell your mom's cooking or your favorite flowers, you can recognize the smell right away? Well, sometimes when our nose is not working properly, we can smell things that are supposed to be good but they don't smell good!

It's like when you taste something that you thought was going to be yummy, but it tasted weird or gross instead.

Parosmia can happen for different reasons. Sometimes it's because our nose got hurt, like when we have a cold or a sinus infection. Also, some people who have lost their sense of smell temporarily or permanently can experience parosmia.

It can be really tricky and frustrating when our nose doesn't work the way it's supposed to. But the good news is that our body can usually heal itself and make things smell normal again with time. And, in the meantime, we can still enjoy yummy foods and gorgeous flowers with our other senses.
