Okay kiddo, so you know that our cars, buses, and trains use a special kind of fuel called gasoline or diesel to run, right? But did you know that this fuel comes from something called oil, which we get from under the ground?
Now, one of the places in Canada where we get this oil from is called the Peace River Oil Sands. This is a big area in Alberta, Canada where there is a lot of oil buried under the ground.
But getting this oil out is not easy. It first needs to be separated from the sand and rock that cover it. This is called 'mining' the oil sands. But sometimes, the oil is so deep under the ground that we can't mine it, so instead, we have to 'drill' for it, which means we make a big hole in the ground and use special machines to bring the oil up to the surface.
Once we get the oil out, it's sent to a refinery where it's purified to make different types of fuels, gasoline and diesel, so we can put it in our cars and drive.
However, getting oil from the Peace River Oil Sands can be harmful to the environment because it involves digging up a lot of earth and trees to get to the oil. This can damage the habitats of plants and animals living in this region. And the process of extracting and refining the oil creates a lot of pollution too.
So, companies working in these oil sands have to follow strict rules and regulations to make sure that they take care of the environment and reduce the pollution as much as possible. Because we want to keep our planet clean and healthy, even as we use it to make fuel for our vehicles.
