ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pedestrian automated safety systems

Okay, so you know when you're walking outside and you see those little white lines on the ground and a man that looks green walking? Well, that's called a crosswalk! And when you cross the street in the crosswalk, you're being very safe. But sometimes cars don't see you and they might try to drive through the crosswalk when you're walking. That's not safe at all!

So to help keep you safe, some places have put in a special system. It's kind of like a robot that can sense when someone is walking in the crosswalk. There are special cameras and sensors on top of the traffic lights that can see when someone is walking. When the system sees you, it will make the man on the traffic light turn red and then the cars will have to stop.

Sometimes there are also special lights that will flash or make noise to make sure the cars know to stop. And sometimes there's even a little sign that says "walk" or "don't walk" so you know when it's safe to cross.

So basically, these special systems help keep you safe when you're walking across the street. Pretty cool, huh?
