So, you know how you have blood flowing through your body, right? Well, sometimes, certain things in your blood can make you sick. This is where pediatric apheresis comes in.
Pediatric apheresis is when doctors use a special machine and a needle to take out some of a sick child's blood. The machine separates the blood into parts, kind of like when you take a smoothie and separate the fruit from the seeds and chunks.
Then, the part of the blood that is causing the sickness is taken out using the machine and the rest of the blood is put back into the child's body. Think of it like taking out the yucky parts of a smoothie and just drinking the delicious part!
This process can be done for different reasons. For example, if a child has too many white blood cells (which help fight infection), doctors can use pediatric apheresis to take some of them out to make the child feel better. Or, if a child has a rare condition where a certain protein builds up in their blood, the machine can take out that protein to help them get better.
Don't worry, though. This process is done with the help of lots of doctors and nurses who make sure the child is safe and feels comfortable the whole time.
