Penal labor in the United States

Penal labor in the United States is when people who broke the law have to work as punishment. People who are given a kind of punishment called a 'prison sentence' have to work instead of going to jail, or in addition to going to jail. The work they do is supervised and is usually related to making or fixing things like clothes, furniture, or buildings. They're not paid for their work, but instead their time spent working reduces their prison sentence.
