Pepper v Hart

Okay kiddo, so there was this case called Pepper v Hart. It was about a teacher named Mr. Pepper who got in trouble for teaching his class some bad stuff. Mr. Pepper said that he didn't know it was wrong because the school didn't tell him.

But then, some smart judges had an idea! They said that the courts could look at what the people who made the law said about it, to help decide what it means. This is called "parliamentary debates."

So basically, now when people like Mr. Pepper have disagreements about what a law means, the judges can look at the debates that happened when the law was made to help figure it out. And that's how Pepper v Hart changed how laws are interpreted in court.
