ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Perichoresis

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with hula hoops or rings that you can link together to make a chain? Well, perichoresis is kind of like that. It’s a big word that means “dancing around each other”. Let me explain it like this:

Imagine you have three friends named Sarah, Tom, and Lily. They love each other very much and they want to hold hands and dance together in a circle. But instead of just holding hands, they decide to wrap their arms around each other and move together in a smooth and fluid way, kind of like a dance.

As they move around each other, their movements become so intertwined that it’s hard to tell where one friend ends and the other begins. It’s like they’re all connected in a way that is hard to explain. This is what perichoresis is all about - it’s when things become so interwoven and connected that they seem like one big thing.

Now, when we talk about perichoresis in a religious sense, we’re usually talking about the idea that God is made up of three different parts - the Father, the Son (also known as Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. They’re all connected in a way that is hard to explain, just like how Sarah, Tom, and Lily were connected as they danced together.

This idea of perichoresis is important to some people because it helps them understand how God can be both one single entity and also made up of three different parts at the same time. It’s kind of complicated, but hopefully I explained it well enough for you to understand!
