Persecution of Jews and Muslims by Manuel I of Portugal

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in Portugal there was a king named Manuel I. He didn't like people who followed different religions than him, especially Jews and Muslims. He thought everyone should believe the same way he did.

So what he did was, he made some really mean laws that made it very hard for Jews and Muslims to live in Portugal. They weren't allowed to practice their own religion, and they had to either leave the country or become Christians. If they chose to stay and not convert, they could be punished in all sorts of terrible ways, like being thrown in jail or even killed.

It was a really sad time for the Jews and Muslims in Portugal because they were being treated unfairly for something they couldn't control - their religion. This kind of treatment is wrong and it's important that we always treat others with kindness and respect, no matter what religion they follow.
