ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Persistence (discontinuity)

Persistence is when something stays the same for a long time. For example, your bed stays in the same place in your room every day. That means it's persistent.

Discontinuity means when something changes suddenly. For example, if you're drawing a line and you stop drawing it, that's a discontinuity because the line suddenly ends.

Now, when we talk about persistence and discontinuity together, we mean that something stays the same for a while and then suddenly changes. It's like a rollercoaster ride where you go up slowly and then suddenly drop down really fast.

So, if we think about your bed again, let's say you've had it in the same spot for years. That's persistence. But then one day, you decide to move it to a different spot. That's a discontinuity because the bed suddenly changes its location.

In science and math, we use persistence and discontinuity to study things and figure out how they change and stay the same over time. It helps us understand the world around us and make predictions about what might happen in the future.
