ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Physical presence test

The physical presence test is like a game of "I Spy" that the government plays to see if you are really living in a certain place. They want to know if you've been there long enough to be considered a "resident."

If you want to be considered a resident, you have to play the game for a certain amount of time. You have to be in the same place for at least 330 full days in a row. That's almost a whole year!

To show the government that you're playing the "I Spy" game right, you need to provide lots of clues. One of the clues is your own diary or calendar that tells you where you've been each day. You can ask grown-ups to help you count all the days you've been somewhere. That way, you can prove to the government that you've been in one place for a really long time.

Now, if you're a grown-up and you're trying to play the "I Spy" game right, you need to do a few more things to show the government you're a resident. You have to have a home there, like rent an apartment or buy a house, and you have to have a job in that place too.

Just like playing "I Spy," it can be tricky to keep track of all the clues you need to show the government you're really a resident. But if you play the game right, you can win and be called a resident!
