ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Picture plane

So, imagine you are drawing a picture. You have a flat piece of paper in front of you and you start drawing on it. That flat piece of paper is called the "picture plane". It's like a window that you are looking through to see your drawing.

Now, you know how when you draw something in real life, it looks different depending on where you are standing? If you stand very close to something, it looks bigger, and if you stand far away, it looks smaller. The picture plane works kind of like that. It's like a stage or a movie screen where you can draw and create a scene, and everything you draw will have a certain size and position on that stage.

But, unlike in real life, you can control exactly where things go on the picture plane. You can decide how big you want something to be, and where it should be placed on the stage. And, when you look at your drawing after you're finished, it will look like you've created a little world on that picture plane.

So, to sum up: the picture plane is like a magical window or stage where you can draw and create scenes, just like in real life, but with total control over where everything goes.
