ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pietà

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a statue of a lady holding a man? That's called a pietà. The lady is usually Mary, and the man is usually Jesus. It's a special statue that a lot of people consider very important.

You see, Jesus was a person who a lot of people believed was very special. They thought he was a messenger from God who was here to teach us about love and forgiveness. But some people didn't like what Jesus was saying, so they decided to hurt him. They nailed him to a cross and left him to die.

After Jesus died, his friends took his body down from the cross and wrapped it up in cloth. Then Mary, who was Jesus' mom, held his body in her arms. That's what a pietà shows – Mary holding Jesus after he died.

The reason people like the pietà so much is because it shows how much Mary loved her son. Even though he was gone, she wanted to hold him close and keep him safe. It also shows how much Jesus loved everyone, because he was willing to die for us. So when people look at a pietà, it reminds them of those important things – love, sacrifice, and forgiveness.
