Piper Alpha

Ok kiddo, so there was this big oil rig called Piper Alpha in the middle of the sea. It was like a really big building on the water where people could get the oil out of the ground underneath the sea. But one day, something really bad happened. There was a huge explosion that made everything go boom and a big fire broke out.

Lots of people were working on the rig at the time and they didn't really know what to do. They tried to stop the fire, but it kept getting bigger and bigger. Some people tried to escape on lifeboats, but the fire was too strong and the boats couldn't get away.

Eventually, some really brave people came to help. They were firefighters who came with helicopters, and they tried to put out the fire and rescue people. It was really hard because the fire was so big and hot, but they managed to save a few people.

Sadly though, a lot of people didn't make it. The explosion and fire were so bad that 167 people lost their lives. It was a really sad day, and people still remember Piper Alpha as one of the worst disasters in the history of oil rigs.

After that, people started to make changes to make sure something like this never happened again. They made new rules and safety equipment to keep oil rigs and the people who work on them safe.
