ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Plane coordinates

Imagine you have a piece of paper with a big plus sign in the middle. This is called a coordinate plane. The plus sign has four sections, called quadrants. Think of these as different neighborhoods on a map.

Now, let's say we want to find a specific point on this coordinate plane. We need two pieces of information to do that, and these are called coordinates.

For example, if we want to find the point that is three steps to the right and two steps up from the center of the coordinate plane, we would write that as (3,2). The number on the left tells us how many steps to the right we need to go, and the number on the right tells us how many steps up we need to go.

Similarly, if we wanted to find the point that is one step to the left and four steps down from the center, we would write that as (-1,-4). The negative sign tells us we need to go in the opposite direction of the positive sign.

We can also use coordinates to draw lines and shapes on the coordinate plane. For example, a line is just a bunch of points that are in a straight row. We can use coordinates to find all the points on that line and then connect the dots to draw the line.

Overall, coordinates help us navigate the coordinate plane like a map and locate specific points or draw shapes on it.
