Planning permission is like getting permission from your parents to do something. When you want to build a new house, you need to ask your parents first. If they think it’s a good idea, they will say yes and you can go ahead and build your house. With planning permission, you are asking the council (who are like your parents) if you can build something on land you own. The council will check if it will be safe for you and your neighbours and then make a decision about whether or not you can go ahead and build.
