ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Plasma window

A plasma window is like a special wall that is made out of gas – kind of like the air you breathe. But it’s not just regular gas – it’s a special type of gas called plasma. Plasma is made up of atoms that have been stripped of some of their electrons – which is like saying they’ve lost some of their parts. When you’ve lost a few parts, you start acting very differently!

When the plasma gas is put between two spaces, it behaves like a thin, invisible wall. This is called a plasma window. Imagine you are in your room at home and you want to see what the weather is like outside. Instead of opening the window, you could turn on a plasma window. The plasma gas molecules would form a barrier that still allows light to come through, so you could see outside.

Plasma windows have lots of really neat uses! For example, they can be used to keep air in one room separate from air in another room. They can be used to keep oxygen from reaching a fire, putting it out. Or they can be used in really high-tech industrial processes that require super clean air environments.

Pretty cool, huh?
