Plaster mold casting

Plaster mold casting is like taking a cookie cutter and using it to make a cookie shape out of a big blob of playdough. Except instead of a cookie, we make a special thing out of melted metal or other materials.

First, we need to make a special shape called a pattern that we want to turn into metal. This can be made out of wood, plastic, or wax. Think of it like making a clay figurine at school.

Next, we make a box around the pattern, like a house. This box is called a flask. We make sure the space around the pattern inside the flask is level and filled with a special liquid called plaster.

The plaster is like playdough that has been mixed with water. We pour it over the pattern and let it dry until it becomes hard like a rock.

Once the plaster is dry, we carefully take the pattern out of the plaster mold. Then we put the mold in a hot oven to dry out any remaining water.

Once the oven has done its job, we can use the plaster mold to pour melted metal or other materials inside. The metal fills up the space where the pattern used to be, and then it hardens inside the plaster mold.

Finally, we break apart the plaster mold to reveal the special thing we made out of metal, just like breaking apart a pinata to find candy inside.
