ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Point cloud

Hey kiddo! Imagine you have a bunch of little toys that you love to play with. Let's say you have tiny cars, balls, and figurines. Now, let's imagine that you want to remember what these toys look like without actually having them in front of you. How would you do that?

Well, one way is to take a picture of them. But what if you wanted to be able to see them from different angles? That's where a point cloud comes in.

A point cloud is like a 3D picture of objects or a space. It's made up of a bunch of points that are all connected to make a sort of "map" of what the objects or space look like. Each point represents a tiny piece of the object or space.

So, let's go back to our toy example. If we wanted to make a point cloud of our toys, we would need a special camera that could take pictures from all angles. The camera would take lots of pictures and combine them together to make a 3D map of our toys.

Point clouds can be really helpful for lots of things. For example, architects can use point clouds to make 3D models of buildings before they're built. Scientists can use point clouds to study things like glaciers and other natural formations. And even doctors can use point clouds to help plan surgeries!

So, that's what a point cloud is. It's like a 3D picture that can help us see objects or spaces from lots of different angles. Pretty cool, huh?
