ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Poitín

Poitín is a kind of alcohol that people make from grains or potatoes. It’s like a type of whiskey or vodka that comes from Ireland. People have been making poitin for a really long time, even before they had fancy distilleries. They would make it in secret and hide it from the law because it was illegal to make.

Making poitin isn’t easy. First, you need to have some grains or potatoes. Then, you have to cook them and let them ferment for a while. This is when the sugar turns into alcohol. After the fermentation process, you need to distill the liquid. This means heating it up and then cooling it down so that the alcohol separates from the rest of the liquid. The alcohol that comes out is the poitin.

Poitin can be very strong, so you should only have a little bit at a time. It isn’t sold in stores because it’s still illegal to make in most places. But some people make it at home just for fun. It’s important to remember that even though people might have made it for a long time ago, it can be dangerous if you don’t do it right. So, stick to drinking the legal stuff like apple juice, okay?
