Police brutality in the United States

Police brutality is when police officers or other law enforcement officers use unnecessary or excessive force on people, especially people who are of a different race than the officers. This often happens during interactions between police officers and people of color, such as people who are Black or Hispanic. In the United States, police officers have used physical force, such as kicking and punching, when people do not follow the officer’s instructions or when the officer has a feeling of hostility towards the person. In some cases, this type of use of force has been deadly. This has led to protests in many cities against police brutality and increased calls for reform so that all people are treated equally and fairly when an officer interacts with them.
