Pontius Pilate was a very important man a very long time ago in a place called Judea (which is now part of Israel). He was a governor who worked for the Roman Emperor, which was like being in charge of a really big area. He was in charge of making sure things were going well and that people were following the rules.
Now, a man named Jesus was causing a lot of commotion at the time. Some people really liked him and thought he was a miracle worker, while others thought he was stirring up trouble. The leaders of the Jewish religion at the time didn't like him either because they thought he was challenging their authority.
One day, Jesus was brought in front of Pontius Pilate because they wanted Pilate to punish him for his actions. But Pilate didn't really think Jesus had done anything that deserved punishment, so he tried to find a way to let him go without getting in trouble with the people who were accusing Jesus.
Unfortunately, it didn't work out and he ended up having to make a tough decision. He let the people choose whether to release Jesus or another prisoner named Barabbas. The crowd chose Barabbas, so Jesus was sentenced to be crucified, which was a very cruel way of killing someone.
So while Pontius Pilate wasn't directly responsible for Jesus' death, he did play a part in the events that led up to it. Today, his name is remembered as the person who allowed or even ordered Jesus' crucifixion.
