Pope Night

Pope night was a time during colonial America when people would gather on the eve of November 5th to celebrate the capture of a man named Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the British Parliament in 1605. During Pope night, people would create effigies, or decorations made to look like people, and burn them in a big fire. This was done to show their support for the British government and to show their dislike for the pope, who was seen as an enemy of the British.

However, Pope night also became a time for rowdy and often dangerous behavior. People would often get drunk and cause fights or damage property. Eventually, authorities began to crack down on Pope night and it became less popular. Today, the tradition of Pope night is no longer observed.
