So, a long long time ago in England, people used to believe in a religion called Catholicism. But the King and many other people didn't like that religion very much, so they made a law called the Popery Act in 1698.
This law said that if someone wanted to practice Catholicism, they had to tell the government about it and pay a big fee. And if they didn't follow these rules, they would be punished with fines or even imprisonment.
This law made it really hard for Catholics to practice their religion freely and made them feel like they weren't free to worship as they wanted to. It wasn't a very nice thing to do, and some people still remember it today as an example of religious discrimination.
