Popular Republican Union (1919-1946)

Okay, so imagine you and your friend like to play with a toy together. One day, you decide that you want to be in charge of the toy all the time and your friend can only play with it when you say so. Your friend might not be happy about this and could say no, but if you're bigger and stronger, you might force them to do what you want.

Now imagine this happening but with whole groups of people instead of just toys. The popular republican union was a group of people in Spain who believed that workers, or people who had jobs, should have more control over their own lives and work. This was during a time when some rich and powerful people in Spain, called capitalists, had a lot of control over everything and workers didn't have much say.

So the popular republican union formed to try to change things by uniting workers and helping them stand up for themselves. They did things like protesting, strikes where they refused to work until their demands were met, and even sometimes using violence to get their message across.

However, the people who had power in Spain (like the government and the military) didn't like this and often used force to try to stop the union from protesting or striking. This led to a lot of conflict between the union and those in power.

Eventually, a civil war broke out in Spain in the 1930s and the popular republican union sided with the government that was trying to make things fairer for workers. Sadly, the government lost the war and the union was banned. It wasn't until many years later that workers in Spain were able to form unions again and have a stronger voice in their own lives and work.
