ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Posthumous execution

Okay kiddo, posthumous execution means punishing someone after they have already died. It's like trying to discipline your pet after it ran away from home and you can't find it anymore.

So, when a person commits a crime that is really bad, the government may want to punish them even if they aren't alive anymore. But obviously, this punishment can't be the same as when they were alive, like going to jail or being fined.

Instead, the government might erase the person's name from history books or take away any honors they may have received while alive. They might even destroy any pictures or statues of that person, so no one remembers them.

It's not a very common thing to do and some people think it's not right to punish someone who is already dead. Others might think that it's a way to warn others not to do bad things, so they don't face the same consequences even when they are gone.
