Posthumous sperm retrieval

Posthumous sperm retrieval means collecting a man's sperm after he dies. Sperm is what makes a baby grow in a woman's tummy. Sometimes, people who want to have a baby but can't, because the father is not alive, use posthumous sperm retrieval.

A doctor or a trained person has to carefully take the sperm from the man's body after he dies, usually no more than 24 hours after. The sperm is then frozen and stored in a special place for later use.

When the sperm is needed, it's thawed and put inside a woman's womb, where it can join with an egg and grow into a baby. It does not guarantee that a baby will be born, but it's one way to give someone the chance to have a baby after the father has passed away.
