ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Power-on reset

Imagine you have a toy that you need to turn on before you can play with it. When you turn the toy on, it makes a noise and starts moving. But imagine that sometimes the toy doesn't work properly, like it doesn't make any noise or move at all. This could happen because it didn't get turned off properly the last time you played with it, or the batteries might have run out.

Now think about your computer or phone. Just like your toy, your computer can sometimes start acting funny, like it's not moving as quickly as it should or some of its programs are not working. This might happen if it was shut down improperly or if there was a power surge. So just like you might need to turn your toy off and on again to fix it, your computer also needs a way to reset itself and start fresh.

That's where the power-on reset comes in. It's like a big red button that you push when your computer or phone needs to start over. When you push the power-on reset button, it turns off your device completely and then turns it back on again. This clears out any of the problems your device might have been having and starts it up fresh with a clean slate.

So just like you might need to turn your toy on and off again to make it work properly, your computer needs a power-on reset to fix any problems it might be having and start fresh.
