Pre-Christian Alpine traditions

Before Christianity became the main religion in the Alps, there were many different traditions and beliefs that people followed. Think of it like different rules and stories that you might follow with your family or friends.

People used to believe in many gods and goddesses who had control over different parts of nature, like the sun or the animals in the mountains. They also believed in spirits that lived in the trees, rocks, and rivers.

People celebrated many different festivals and holidays throughout the year. For example, during the winter solstice, they would light fires and sing songs to celebrate the longest night of the year. During the spring, they would have a big festival to honor the goddess of fertility and ask for a good harvest.

These traditions were passed down from generation to generation, and they helped people make sense of the world around them. They also helped people feel connected to each other and to their environment.

When Christianity came to the Alps, many of these traditions were replaced by new beliefs and customs. But some people still keep these old traditions alive today, as a way of remembering their ancestors and connecting with their culture.
