ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Preamble

Okay, so you know how when you're playing a game with someone, you usually have some rules that you need to follow so everyone can have fun and everything is fair?

Well, it's the same thing with our country. We have a set of rules that everyone needs to follow so that we can all live together peacefully and have the same rights and freedoms.

The Preamble is just a little part at the beginning of our country's rulebook, called the Constitution, that explains what our country stands for and what we want to achieve. It's like setting the tone for the rest of the book.

It says things like, "We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity...".

Basically, it means that we want to work together as a country to make things better for everyone, be fair, keep the peace, make sure we're safe, and have the freedom to live how we want to live.

So, just like when you play a game and you know the rules from the beginning, the Preamble helps us understand what our country is all about and what we're trying to accomplish.
