ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Predictions of the collapse of the Soviet Union

Okay kiddo, do you know what a country is? Well, the Soviet Union was a really big country that existed for a long time, kind of like how your school has been around for a while. But some people started talking about how they thought the Soviet Union might not be around for much longer.

Imagine playing with a really old toy. You might notice that it's starting to break and not work as well as it used to. That's kind of what people were noticing about the Soviet Union. Some of the people who lived there didn't have enough money or food, and they started to get really unhappy.

There were also some big changes happening in the world at the time, like advances in technology and a new way of doing business that the Soviet Union didn't really keep up with. It was kind of like if all your friends were using a new app to play games and you were still trying to use an old, broken toy to have fun.

Some people who studied the Soviet Union and what was going on in the world around it started to think that it might not be able to keep going for much longer. They thought that the problems and changes happening were making it really hard for the Soviet Union to survive, like how it would be really hard for a turtle with a broken shell to survive in the wild.

Eventually, the Soviet Union did collapse in 1991, and that meant that it split into smaller countries that each went their own way. It was a big change for a lot of people, but some of the people who had been talking about the possibility of it happening were less surprised because they had been paying attention to the signs that things were starting to fall apart.
