ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pressing (wine)

Have you ever made juice from fruit? When you squeeze an apple, for example, you get the juice out. Pressing in winemaking is like squeezing the grapes to make juice.

Winemakers put the grapes into a container, usually a big machine that presses them gently to release the juice. The juice is then collected and put into a different container to start the fermentation process.

But winemakers don't just press the grapes once and call it done. They usually do it a few times to get all of the juice out, just like when you squeeze a sponge a few times to get all of the water out.

After pressing the grapes, the leftover solids are called pomace. Some winemakers use these leftover bits to make grappa or brandy.

So, pressing in winemaking is like squeezing the grapes to get all of the juice out, which is then turned into wine.
