Once upon a time, a long time ago, Ukraine was a part of a big country called the Soviet Union. The people of Ukraine had their own language, culture, and history but they didn't have their own government to make decisions for their country. They lived under the rules and laws made by the Soviet Union.
But, one day, the people of Ukraine decided that they wanted to be their own bosses and make their own decisions about their own country. They wanted to have their own government and to be free from the Soviet Union's rules and laws.
So, on August 24, 1991, some very important people in Ukraine got together and decided to make a big announcement. They declared that Ukraine was now an independent country and had its own government to make decisions for its people. This big announcement was called the Proclamation of Ukrainian Independence.
This was a very happy day for the people of Ukraine. They could finally make their own rules and laws to make their country better. The Proclamation of Ukrainian Independence was the start of a new era for Ukraine and the beginning of a new chapter in its history.
