ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Production of gramophone records

Do you like listening to music? Well, back in the olden days, people didn't have fancy technology like we do now to listen to their favorite songs. Instead, they used something called gramophone records.

So, how are these records made? First, a really talented musician or band records their music onto a special disc called a master plate. This is like a special CD, but much bigger and made of metal.

Once the master plate is made, it's time to make copies of the music onto smaller records. A big machine takes the master plate and presses it onto a thin vinyl disc, kind of like pressing a cookie cutter onto dough to make cookies. The machine is careful not to squish the disc too hard, so the music can be heard clearly.

But wait, we're not done yet! The newly made record isn't ready to be played quite yet. Next, the record has to be trimmed around the edges to make it the right size. Then, some very important grooves are added to the record. These grooves are like a big, winding path that the needle of the gramophone goes down to play the music.

Lastly, the record goes through a special machine that puts a label on it with the name of the musician or band and the title of the song. Now, the record is finally ready to be enjoyed by music lovers everywhere!
