ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Progressive realism

Ohh this is a pretty difficult concept, but I'll try to explain it to you as simply as possible!

Basically, Progressive Realism is a way of looking at the world that combines two important things: being realistic (which means seeing things as they really are and not just how we want them to be) and being progressive (which means always trying to make things better and fairer for everyone).

So, a Progressive Realist is someone who knows that there are problems in the world (like poverty, inequality, discrimination, and climate change), but who also believes that we can work together to solve these problems and create a better future.

For example, let's say you're playing with your toys and your friend comes over to play with you. If you're a Progressive Realist, you might notice that your friend's toys are different from yours - maybe they're older or not as nice. You could choose to ignore this and just keep playing with your own toys, or you could try to be fair and give your friend some of your toys to play with.

Or let's say you're learning about history in school and you learn about all the terrible things that people have done to one another in the past (like slavery, war, and genocide). As a Progressive Realist, you might feel sad or angry about these things, but you wouldn't just give up and say "that's the way the world is." Instead, you'd try to learn from these mistakes and work towards a future where people treat each other with kindness and respect.

So, in short, Progressive Realism is about being honest about the problems we face, but also having hope that we can make a difference and create a better world for everyone.
