ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proto-Afroasiatic language

Okay kiddo, so thousands and thousands of years ago, before you and I were born, lots of people lived in Africa and spoke lots of different languages. But some linguists, people who study languages, think that all those languages might have come from one big language that they called proto-Afroasiatic.

Think of it like a huge family tree where all the different languages are like branches coming off the main trunk. Some of those branches went to different parts of Africa, and others traveled to Asia and Europe. And just like how you can tell that cousins are related because they have some of the same features, linguists can see similarities between the different languages that suggest they all came from the same big language.

Now, it's important to remember that this is just a theory and not everyone agrees with it. But if it's true, then it means that all those different African, Asian, and European languages have a really long history and are all part of one big family. Cool, huh?
