ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proto-Slavic language

Proto-Slavic language is like a puzzle that we try to put together to understand how it was spoken a long long time ago by people who lived in Eastern Europe. We know some things about it because we can look at the different Slavic languages that exist today, like Russian, Polish, or Serbian, and see where they are similar or different from each other. When we put all these pieces together, we can get an idea of what Proto-Slavic might have sounded like, but we can't be sure because we don't have any recordings or written documents from back then. It's kind of like if you were trying to guess what a cake tasted like by looking at the ingredients and how it was made, but you never got to actually eat the cake yourself. Overall, Proto-Slavic language is a mystery that we are still trying to solve!
