ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Psychological safety

Do you know how when you're with your friends, you feel comfortable being yourself and saying what's on your mind without worrying that they'll make fun of you or get mad at you? That's kind of what psychological safety is like.

Psychological safety means feeling safe to express ourselves and take risks without fear of being laughed at, embarrassed, punished or rejected.

Imagine you're playing a game and you want to try a new move or strategy that you're not sure will work. With psychological safety, you feel like you can try it out without worrying that your friends will make fun of you if it fails.

The same thing applies to school, work or any other group setting. If you feel psychologically safe, you're more likely to be creative, explore new ideas, make suggestions and ask questions without fear that someone will criticize you or shut you down.

In summary, having psychological safety means feeling accepted and free from fear and judgment so that you can be yourself, take risks, and express your ideas without hesitation.
